Effects of Insomnia

The many effects of insomnia and most depend on the person and type of insomnia. Insomnia is best defined by the quality of sleep you get, not by the number of hours or how quickly you fall asleep. One of the main effects of insomnia is overwhelming sleepiness mixed with fatigue, lethargy and irritability. Insomniacs may have problems concentrating and focusing on the tasks at hand.  Insomnia will have a very negative affects on your health and well being and as the effects of the Insomnia increases, you will probably find that you are less able to manage the stresses of everyday life.

When your body doesn't get the quality sleep it needs to rejuvenate each night, the body and brain aren't at their peak the next day. You'll feel very tired and your reflexes become slow with sagging energy levels. Insomniacs often have trouble learning, concentrating and remembering things. Your work performance drops and you become sluggish with mood changes, even irritability for no reason. Insomnia often leads to emotional and physical problems and depression. Even though insomnia is normally a symptom of some underlying disorder, it can cause physical and psychological illness if not treated.

There are three types of insomnia:

·         Transient or short term. This lasts only for a few nights to a few weeks

·         Intermittent. Insomnia is short term but recurs.

·         Chronic. This type is the most serious and last for weeks, years or an entire life span.

Insomnia can affect relationships at home and work. It affects your quality of life. It is sometimes brought on by your mental attitude. If you can't calm your thoughts you are intensifying the sleep problem. The effects of insomnia on a person's life can be devastating. But with the right help and learning how to change the things that are causing your sleeplessness, you can control the insomnia.
